It's called work for a reason; it's not always fun. Those who love their work can't deny the grind, the ground hog repetition. It's hard work. What makes work fun is putting your shoulder behind things that are worthy.

The Fourth of July has special meaning in the Shepherd House.

We shared, with the rest, a national celebration.

It’s our birthday!  On this day, We-the-People declared ourselves to the world a new nation under God, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.  We share an inalienable endowment — and a promise — with a new order of the ages.

We share a promise with a new order of the ages.

But something else.  The Shepherd family also declared itself on this day: Frank and Maureen, Guy’s father and mother, became husband and wife, until death would part them.

My dad had a way with words.

“Son, I was married at the age of 33 and on the Fourth of July.

At the age of 33, our Lord and Savior ended His pilgrimage. I gave up mine as well.  On this day our country declared independence. I gave up mine.

Frank Shepherd loved his wife and country, until death parted him from both.

Frank Shepherd was a Planned Man Poet Laureate.  Happy Anniversary, Mom, and happy birthday, America.
